The Latest Trend: IV Vitamins or How to Piss Away Money

Celebrities often act as popularizers of health fads and pseudoscientific claptrap. You may have heard the latest: intravenous vitamins.

Do you have a hangover? You need intravenous vitamins. Jet lag? IV vitamins. Trying to lose weight? That's right: IV vitamins.

Tim Caulfield debunks this latest myth in a piece he published in the National Post:

"IV therapy is just the most recent and intense version of the illogical "more-vitamins-the-better" mentality. Let's be absolutely clear: there is no evidence to support the idea that IV vitamin therapy provides any of the health benefits promised by its purveyors. Moreover, there is no evidence that getting vitamins faster, or bypassing the digestive system, provides any health benefits. Unless you have a fairly serious condition that has caused a severe clinical deficiency, the best way to get your vitamins is through the food that you eat."

Even intravenous hydration is now being touted as a cure-all, but the evidence actually goes the other way:

"In fact, there is little evidence to support the idea that using an IV is a better way to hydrate. Intuitively, it may seem more effective because the fluid is being pumped straight into you veins. But in most situations, hydrating the old way - a process known in scientific circles as "drinking water" - is just as effective, or, some studieshave found, even more effective than using an IV."
